Google Penguin: Discussing 5 Ways to Adjust with Google’s Latest Penguin Update

I’m back!!!! I hope no one minds if I welcome myself back, although I would admit that’s a little weird. Well, it’s been a while since I last posted an entry on this blog and I’m so happy all the deadlines are almost finished and Rendition Digital will be in New York next week for another event. “Book Expo America 2012”

It’s been a crazy month at work and new changes and movements are taking place. I understand this comes a bit of an adjustment for some, including me, but as they say, “Change is Constant” and you have to learn how to adapt. Personally, I feel very optimistic about these changes and excited with the up-coming new challenges. I’m moving to another  task in my department and I just wanted to say, “Bring it on!!!!”. So back to my tech updates, I had to catch up with some reading and I understand Google recently unveiled a major change to its mysterious and powerful search engine algorithm. Along with this “Penguin update,” many of the search engine optimization (SEO) techniques that websites once utilized no longer work.

The search engine giant is a major source of discovery for apps and web-based writers, so I’ve collected some advice to make sure your online writing doesn’t get punished by the Google Penguin update. The five tips follow below…

Google explained the update: “this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content. While we can’t divulge specific signals because we don’t want to give people a way to game our search results and worsen the experience for users, our advice for webmasters is to focus on creating high quality sites that create a good user experience and employ white hat SEO methods instead of engaging in aggressive webspam tactics.”

5 Ways to Cope with Google’s Penguin Update

1. Entrepreneur had this advice: “Eliminate overt web spam. If you have improperly copied or “scraped” content, keyword-stuffed content, doorway pages that redirect readers to sites the search engines can’t see or any other items Google considers to be violations of itsWebmaster Guidelines, get rid of them as soon as you’re able to.”

2. Business 2 Community had this tip: “Create content for other websites and blogs. Prepare an editorial calendar for writing articles and guest blog posts that can be published on websites and blogs other than your own. This helps you gain new exposure and earn quality backlinks – just make sure you only offer your content to trusted and reputable content publishers.”

3. Google News Submit told writers to diversify: “Do not rely strictly on Google for all of your SEO and traffic! Work with partners to develop other sources of traffic. Try out MSN Adcenter (Bing and Yahoo) as well as some social networking campaigns. Also, some press release companies can provide you valuable links on some of the countries most popular mass media websites such as The Boston Globe, Chron.com, UPI.com, the San Francisco Chronicle, Banks.com and more.”

4. Search Engine Watch had this guidance: “Don’t try too hard for that perfect title. Avoid obsessing over on-page ratios. You don’t need that exact match anchor all the time, in fact you don’t even need a link (think named entities). In many ways, less-is-more is the call of the day.

5. WebiMax VP of marketing Todd Bailey shared this tip at CNBC:  “Businesses need to get rid of the philosophy that they need to get as many links and as much content out as there as they can … They need to look at a public relations strategy and try to produce quality content by pitching news outlets, doing press releases and guest blogging. The other options are social media campaigns and other multichannel options such as referrals and using CPM advertising.”

Google Makes Email Communication Easier

Gmail‘s automated message translation is no longer an experiment. Now Google’s popular email platform can automatically translate emails from one language to another. So, for example, you can get an email in Japanese and have it translated instantly into English, or communicate with a friend in French without ever knowing the language.

Automatic Message translation was originally introduced in Gmail Labs in May 2009, where it became a hit with a variety of different Gmail users — particularly business users who work with people around the globe.

“Some people just wanted to easily read newsletters from abroad. Another person wrote in telling us how he set up his mom’s Gmail to translate everything into her native language, thus saving countless explanatory phone calls (he thanked us profusely),” Jeff Chin, Product Manager for Google Translate wrote in a blog post. “Since message translation was one of the most popular labs, we decided it was time to graduate from Gmail Labs and move into the real world.”

The service will be gradually rolled out to Gmail users over the next few days. When you receive an email in a language that is not your own, clicking the “Translate message” button on the header of the email will translate it instantly for you.

Bilingual users have the the option to turn off the feature, and those who regularly receive messages that need translation can opt to have Gmail always translate messages they receive.

JOKE of the DAY

A salesman returns from a long road trip to Europe, having left his beloved cat in his brother‘s care.  The minute he lands in the States and clears customs, he calls his brother and inquires about his pet.

“The cat’s dead,” replies his brother bluntly.

The salesman is devastated.  “You know how much that cat meant to me,” he sobs into the phone,  “Couldn’t you at least have given a little thought into a nicer way of breaking that news to me?  For instance you could have said, ‘Well you know, the cat got out of the house one day and climbed up on the roof, and the fire department couldn’t get her down, and finally she died of exposure, or starvation or something?’  Why are you always so thoughtless?”

“Look I’m really, really, sorry,” says his brother.  “I’ll try to do better next time, I swear.”

“Okay, let’s just put this ugly incident behind us,” said the high strung salesman.  “How are you anyway?  How’s Mom?”

Moral of the story.   A sales professional who travels a lot and lives alone, should know better than to get a pet.  It’s not fair to the pet or the your relatives you coerce into looking after it while you are away.  Second, with the advent of the internet,  road warriors can now stay in touch with email, Google phone, Hangout sessions or other forms of video chat.  With so many different ways of staying in touch, you now have no excuse not to.

ABOUT THE DEVELOPER:

I previously had a Galaxy Y and made a ROM for my personal use, I do not have this phone right now (because I sold it) but I still managed to save the custom rom I made. I will buy a Galaxy Y unit (just for testing) probably next month so I can continue making more versions of this ROM. I am keeping an eye for a customed kernel for SGY so I can integrate it with my ROM. I hope you enjoy this initial release, because I extremely enjoyed it! Thanks.

Gatekeepers: friend or foe?

 I think the first 3-5 seconds of the call is key to how you can start a typical conversation without getting branded with the negative image of salesperson. Let’s face it, some businesses have been practicing traditional sales tactics over a decade now that are not effective anymore. Our customers are smarter and that includes your gatekeepers. They can smell telemarketing a mile away from their seats. The goal here is to move away from the negative image of a salesperson. We have to understand that most of our friendly gatekeepers would be instructed to brush you off nicely in any way possible to get you off the phone.

Dropping in without an appointment is ALWAYS AN INTERRUPTION and so therefore a withdrawal from the person’s emotional bank account…so be prepared with a really good deposit — whether it is your “sunny disposition” or your genuine interest in the first person or subsequent person(s) with whom you speak. In sales, as it is in life, the successful person follows the edict: A B C — Always Be Curious — if you thought I was going to say “Closing” for the C, then you are focusing on the end and not the opening… Curiosity allows you the opportunity to use the most important words in sales: “You and Your”. By using these words consistently in your responses to your potential customers, you will stay customer focused and not product centered.

I strongly recommend with respecting where the gatekeepers are coming from and gaining their trust is huge advantage. They’re just like any other employee who may actually be having the worst day in their careers. People respond in kind and if you sound genuine enough, you’d may get a genuine response. The key is to have a new mindset to achieve the goal. You don’t kiss on the first date, do you? So, on a cold call “you never sell anything”, your goal is to gain a favorable position to set yourself as a solution worth looking into.

The New Thinking

I understand that s lot of you who’s been training in sales for the past ten years would find this idea very difficult to understand. Focusing on not selling is hard when your job is actually sales, and when you think burning through potential customers would help you get the job done, think again. This new thinking has a great effect in terms of productivity and numbers. The numbers that you would normally see in terms of contacts would drop significantly, however the quality of your contacts will increase dramatically. This approach will also help you build your brand as a company who sets itself apart when building new business relationships are concerned in short “prospecting”.

Catching the early morning call for the owner or a late call in the afternoon just before the office closes is the best method to increase your contact rate. Prospecting is not a contact sport anymore the more quality conversations you make with a prospect, the higher probability of finding someone with a an actual need for your service. Most of the time you may find that there’s no need but by just using this approach and conveying that you’re not just after closing a deal, that you’re a reliable resource in terms of whatever it is that your company offers makes the whole experience memorable in favor of your company. It also lessens the traumatic experienced by a high pressure sales approach.

Follow Through

Understand that the goal here again, is not to “SELL”, your goal is to maintain a good relationship with anyone who primarily picks up the phone for their business. I would use my first 5 seconds on the phone like this:

“Hi! My name is Jay, I was wondering if you can help me out for a second? (Pause and wait). 80% would say – “How can I help? “Let’s have a try.” “Let’s see if I can help.”

What you just did is just really tell them the truth that the you really need they’re help and that you have no idea of how to proceed on reaching out to the right person. The situation branches out from here and would depend on how his/ her response felt. There’s only two outcomes here either their suspicious adamant in asking the purpose of the call or you may get a warm response.

Either way I always ask this question: I was hoping maybe you can help me reach someone who handles (relative department: operations, outsourcing, QA), I was hoping to set a meeting with him and see if your company would be “open” to the idea of looking at some issues related to (whatever services are offered e.g. outsourcing, game testing, recruitment or staffing needs, Office supplies, etc.)? (Shut up and don’t say a word, let her answer the question and listen carefully)

*DO NOT IMMEDIATELY JUMP INTO A PRESENTATION after they ask you any type of question that would indicate interest/disinterest. They are not confirmed decision makers and asking the right question at the right time will get you the right answers, now is not the time to do a presentation.

*You’ll also get a lot of resistance at this point and again remember your not selling anything. You’re merely just trying to see if it’s a fit. If you receive any resistance and it pertains to you cold calling them to sell something. Do not feel offended it causes aggression and may lead you to defend yourself and be persuasive (another negative impression you want to avoid.) You can do anything to address this type of resistance, but I always address this calmly with:

“I’m sorry if I came across the wrong way. The last thing I wanna do is to try to convince or persuade you otherwise. I just wanted to see if you guys would be open, that’s all. Is there better way that I can position my company so that we may earn you business and explore how we can work together to solve issues in (your value proposition).

Unless you have successfully established your purpose, you will never get past the point where they will keep asking you about the nature of your call. If you did however establish your true intentions are not to sell but merely to see if there are possibilities of working together, normally loosen up and help out. Worse case scenario is that a gatekeeper would nicely turn you down. At this point you need to find the right direction to the decision maker and work a little bit of charm in terms of navigating the company by research or networking online.

Making someone laugh normally works for me. Use your personal touch and attempt to sell yourself and not the product or service that you offer.

The genuine intent of not chasing the end goal of the sales process (closing a sale), also helps on moving on to the next call. Don’t be afraid to walk away if it’s not a fit. It may not even be worth it in the end. You may end up spending more on time wasters than qualified clients. Good luck and happy selling!
