Thoughts on Davao’s Head Honcho – Mayor Duterte for President

JduterteUST when I thought the Philippines is hopeless, a fine man with high moral principle came to light in the very person of Duterte – the “kill them mayor”. We have heard about his fierce governance in Davao and needless to say, he is earning respect for all the changes he has done for the city.

How I adore his tough speeches and fearless comebacks, and the more I hear clever news about him and his harsh anti-crime campaign , the more I think to my self, such is what we need for a better Philippines.

Why not? Davao City is one of the most peaceful cities in Southeast Asia today. Matter of fact it is ranked 9th safest city in the world. Triple digit crime has diminished to 0.8 in his tenure. They have effectively implemented curfew on the selling of alcoholic beverages, which is often one of the leading causes of crimes; motor vehicles were given speed limits, which must have discouraged riding-in-tandem criminals from committing felonies. He has ordered all shopping malls and commercial centers to install, operate and maintain high-end CCTVs in all entrance and exit points of their premises which, as we all know, has paved the way in solving many crimes.

Discipline – as what Duterte keeps on reiterating – is what the country needs. True enough, this 10-letter word has brought success to many countries and our lack of it has left us far behind.

People may have different insights and beliefs when it comes to leadership but I am for an iron-fist governance. In the current situation of the Philippines and with the kind of criminals and politicians we have – we cannot survive a velvet glove kind of management. Criminals these days are hell bent. Compassion is for human – for those who are worth living. Those who have caused so much misery and suffering to others deserve to be given otherwise.

If it’s true that Duterte has plans to run for a higher position, I don’t see anything wrong with that at all. We’ve done so much trials and errors for the past decades voting for the wrong leaders of this country. Why not give someone, who has proven himself to be an efficient and effective leader, a chance to head our government?

Duterte is a law graduate, which makes him more qualified because I believe having a high educational attainment should have been a prerequisite for anyone planning to run in politics a long time ago, not just be able to read and write.
Aspirants for such seats must have a clean track record, too. Those who have a history or are charged with plunder must be banned from running until the court clears them. We’ve had enough scams and corrupt officials for the longest time haven’t we? Now we see truth revealed right in front of us. What’s there to still be considered with these politicians planning to run again? When will we ever learn?

We cannot stick to the current system where, when money talks, lawbreakers are absolved – free to walk on the streets again. We need an iron fist that when it talks, every criminal would back off.•

Kickstart earmarks up to US$50M (P2.2B) fresh funds for high-growth startups

Globe President and CEO Ernest L. Cu announces fresh US$50M VC funding during Kickstart’s 3rd anniversary celebration attended by startup founders, mentors, partners, among others.

Globe Telecom has earmarked up to US$50 million (P2.2 billion) in a new venture capital (VC) fund which its wholly-owned subsidiary Kickstart Ventures, Inc. will use to help drive the rapid growth of high-potential startups. This growth fund or “Fund 2” targets startups in expansion mode anywhere in the world with clear regional and global prospects.

“In the Philippines, I have yet to see a startup break through in a big way, not because of lack of talent but because the whole sector is devoid of support. Large tech incumbents operate well here, but startups struggle,” said Ernest L. Cu, Globe President and CEO, explaining the Fund’s rationale.

He added:  “Globe has been finding and working with smaller, innovative startups to boost the quality of its customer experience, with very good results. So good that they get acquired by large global companies at respectably higher valuations! Seeing this potential, we believe that Kickstart can use the VC fund to help our startup partners to scale even faster via an equity investment.”

Kickstart started in 2012 with a $2.4M seed fund or “Fund 1” focused on seed and early-stage startups. For Fund 1, Kickstart also recently received a US$1.1M (Php50M) top-up for 2015 deals. Investment targets of Fund 1 can be domiciled in any country and have no nationality requirements. Its earlier-stage nature means closer, more frequent mentoring, thus, Fund 1 portfolio companies tended to have some of their operations in the Philippines.

On the other hand, Fund 2 expands on Globe Telecom’s innovation thesis and is possibly the largest commitment to early-stage startup investing coming out of a Philippine company. Like Fund 1, investment targets of Fund 2 can be based in any country with no nationality requirements for founders but they are aimed at more developed startups that have validated their product-market fit and are now looking to expand.

“We are looking for startups that have strategic capabilities of value to communications and digital companies, in which we could invest more significant sums at Series “A” round and beyond to drive customer adoption and market momentum. These startups can be anywhere in the world and this new fund underscores our confidence that Philippine capital and the Philippine market will support innovation,” said Minette Navarrete, Kickstart President.

Fund 2 is intended to help drive rapid growth in startups focused on the digital communications domain and encompasses telecoms as well as media, data analytics, Internet of Things, financial services, health, education, IT security, and energy and spectral efficiency.

Startups would be able to leverage the relationships of Kickstart within the Ayala and Singtel networks through the ff: 1) having their product undergo technical due diligence from Globe in anticipation of a Philippine market roll-out and 2) receiving warm introductions to affiliate operating companies in the region as well as to mentors, advisors, and investor contacts of Kickstart.

So far, Kickstart has made 20 investments.  Many have grown and attracted follow-on funding from third-party investors including recognized institutional investors like Y Combinator, 500 Startups, Omidyar, Wavemaker, IMJ Investment Partners, FutureNow Ventures, Seawood Capital, Elea Foundation, and a number of local and overseas angel networks.

Why “Middle Managers” Are Critical for BPO Companies

There is a commonly held misconception that “middle managers” can cost companies both money and efficiency.  However, in the business process outsourcing industry, this statement couldn’t be any farther from the truth.

When it comes to business process outsourcing Philippines, these middle managers are essentially the glue that keeps the entire organization together.  Without them, fundamental processes would fall apart, and the company would be left afloat in very dangerous waters.  Here are several reasons why middle management is such an integral piece of Philippines business process outsourcing:

Internal and External Communication

In a business process outsourcing company, middle managers are the ones who communicate externally, typically with customers and suppliers.  In addition, the middle managers are the ones who communicate internally with members of senior management.  This means that middle managers essentially bridge an important gap in business process outsourcing companies.  They know what’s happening inside and outside the company.  In Philippines business process outsourcing, this could mean that answers to critical problems exist in the hands of middle management.

A Diverse Skill Set

Middle managers possess a wealth of diverse skills that make up part of the glue that holds business process outsourcing companies together.  One of the key skills they often use is virtual management, which involves working remotely with teams of people across the globe.  This means middle managers are experts at using technology to collaborate and achieve a common goal.  Without the know-how of middle management to apply technology in a team-oriented environment, the cohesiveness in Philippines business process outsourcing would not exist.  Other skills that middle managers excel in include cultural awareness and sensitivity, multitasking, trouble-shooting, and change implementation.

The Future of the Organization

Middle managers serve as leaders and mentors for the employees working under them.  They are essentially responsible for building the next generation of management in the company. Business process outsourcing Philippines will continue to grow at an exponential rate, and it is important to have excellent middle managers in place to foster the development of upcoming players in the game.

With middle managers taking on the responsibility of communicating externally and internally, exercising a diverse skill set, and training the future leaders of the organization, it is clear that these employees are integral to the advancement of Philippines business process outsourcing.  No organization would be successful without the presence of strong middle management.  There is simply no way to accomplish business process outsourcing Philippines without them in place.

Attention All Passengers: Your Flight To Pandora is DELAYED.

<img src="https://i2.wp.com/www.thehollywood.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Avatar-Sequel.jpg" alt="Avatar Sequel" />

Back in April, producer John Landau hinted that Avatar 2 might not make cinemas by 2014, as previously planned. Well this week director James Cameron issued his own update, revealing that the film definitely won’t hit “until 2015 or later.”

Speaking to the New York Times, the director explained that he is hard at work on the scripts for parts 2 and 3, and revealed that while the motion-capture work will be done in California, the bulk of the of the action will be shot at Peter Jackson’s production studio in Wellington, New Zealand.

The paper also explained that “News media reports of Avatar 4 are premature, although Mr. Cameron hasn’t ruled it out.”

So can you wait another three years to return to Pandora?

Personally I still keep both apps for its strengths making up for the flaws. Try it out yourself and make your final verdict. I’m hoping for more improvements in the next few weeks.

Is Outsourcing For Small/Medium Size Companies?

As a business, you’ve probably encountered suggestions for outsourcing solutions. Outsourcing solutions covers parts of your operation to the extent that it would have you thinking about outsourcing everything you need. In theory, you can do that. But just because a lot of businesses are trumpeting the benefits of outsourcing does not mean that you should automatically follow. Should you leave talent management, for instance, to an outsourced company? It would be best to consider the benefits of outsourcing first before making a decision.

Focus On Your Business

Letting you focus on your core activities when a company expands, so will all other aspects of it. If you don’t have enough resources, you will end up having to compromise in certain areas, compromising the growth of your company in general because you can’t keep up with all the demands. Outsourcing certain areas of your business will leave your resources intact so you can divert them into areas that really matter, such as the core activities that gave you the capability to expand in the first place. You can’t do without back-office services so simply letting others handle those services for you will resolve a lot of problems you might be having.

Allows for Quick Growth

Letting you become more efficient as your business grows, you will need to increase back-office functions as well in order to cope. However, keeping up with those back-office functions may end up derailing your growth because of the upkeep. For example, an expanding doctor’s office will get a lot more patients if more insurance plans are accepted. However, there are different insurance providers and a million terms and conditions to keep up with and for an ordinary office assistant, this can be overwhelming. Opting to outsource the medical billing portion of the business will help the doctor streamline his services and become more efficient in the overall. Efficiency also turns to savings in the long run because you don’t end up wasting resources for various activities.

Decreases HR Overhead Costs

Letting you reduce overhead costs as you grow, so will your needs. Unfortunately, catering to these needs can be costly. Consider this example as to how outsourcing solutions can help you: Growing as a business means you will need a bigger office. But office space is expensive. Outsourcing some of the back-office functions you have will eliminate the need for more office space because those functions you outsourced no longer have to be performed in your office. Not needing more office space will then let you stick to your old costs (letting you save by default) while still getting all the back-office functions you need.

Let’s You Be Proactive Rather Than Reactive

Staffing flexibility there are certain functions in your business that are cyclical or seasonal in demand. Hence, you only need people to work for you for certain periods of time. Having to bring in an employee just to cover the spike can be tedious and will waste precious resources because your resources are being diverted to the employment process instead of the job you just need done. Outsourcing will let you skip out on all the hassle by going straight to having the job done. And the sooner the job is done, the sooner your business will benefit from it.
