When most people think of Asus, the first thing that comes to mind is the high quality hardware the company produces. However, it is also one of the leading producers of desktop PCs and laptops. The Asus G74SX is a perfect example of what this company is able to produce in the world of gaming laptops. The first thing hardcore gamers should look at when comparing gaming laptops is the hardware used to power these portable powerhouses, and the Asus G74SX has some of the best hardware on the market. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M is one of the best video cards on the market and the first GPU in the NVIDIA GeForce 500M lineup. With 3GB of memory and the capability of producing 3D gaming on your laptop, this card is not one for the faint of heart. The video card is complimented by the Intel Core i7 2630QM processor and an outstanding 12GB of DDR3 RAM. These high-end components and an overall quality design make it easy for us to give the Asus G74SX our
The video card is one of the most important pieces of hardware in any type of gaming machine. Since gaming laptops are not the easiest to upgrade, it is a good idea to make sure the video card in your machine is exactly what you want. NVIDIA released the GeForce GTX 560M video card for notebook gamers. With advancements in technology come faster and more powerful processing from video cards and other hardware. The 560M utilizes DirectX11, which complements the quad-core process and makes 3D viewing possible on this gaming laptop. The Asus G74SX has a 17.3-inch screen, perfect for playing the latest and greatest games in 3D or simply watching your favorite videos in 1080p HD quality. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M video card makes all of this possible and will do so for years to come.
Like many of the other gaming laptops we reviewed, the Asus G74SX utilizes the built-in 5.1 surround sound to produce quality sound on a mobile device. The sound may not compare to stand-alone speakers used on your gaming PC, but it should be more than adequate for most gamers.
You may have the most amazing video card and gig after gig of memory, but without a high quality processor, they will do you no good. The Intel Core i7 2630QM processor is the processor of choice by many of the top gaming laptop manufactures because of its quad-core capability and high processing speeds. Since the Asus G74SX is running such high-end hardware, it is a relief to see a processor that will be able to handle anything you can possibly throw at it. With this processor’s four cores and eight threads transferring data at 2.0GHz, you will find that software will load fast and multitasking will not slow you down at all.
Memory, specifically RAM, is one of the most important things to consider when purchasing a new gaming laptop. The typical gaming laptop comes with around 6GB of memory, which is more than enough for most gamers. Asus isn’t totally convinced of this and has added an additional 6GB of RAM to this amazing gaming laptop. With 12GB of DDR3 memory, you will never have to worry about not having the required amount of memory to play even the most demanding games on the market.
Along with a substantial amount of memory, the Asus G74SX also comes with an exceptionally large hard drive. At 1.5TB, you should have no problem storing media files, games and other software on this gaming laptop. The hard drive is running at 7,200 rpms, which is the standard speed for most storage devices. The only way to get much faster is to spend a lot more money and invest in a SSD (solid-state drive) which doesn’t use any moving parts to transfer data. However, most solid-state drives have a higher price tag and a limited size capacity.
One of the first things we noticed about this gaming laptop is that even though the screen is quite large, the laptop only weighs 9.4 pounds, which is extremely light. Not only do you get a powerful gaming laptop, but one that is also ultra portable and still offers 1080p HD quality resolution. The average screen size for a gaming laptop is going to be right around 17.3 inches, which is exactly where the Asus G74SX falls. Many laptop users prefer a somewhat smaller screen, but when it comes down to detail, bigger is always better.
The Asus G74SX has a battery life of about three hours while gaming and much longer when running Word documents or browsing the web. We did find that the battery drained much faster when running games at max resolution or trying to run multiple programs at the same time. One of the huge selling factors on this gaming laptop would have to be the included Blu-ray player, which makes it possible to watch HD movies on this laptop. As with any standard computer on the market, the Asus G74SX uses Windows 7 Home Premium, which is ideal for multitasking and ease of use.
Asus makes it possible to get in contact with a tech representative or get a few questions answered without forcing you to spend hours on its website. The support page includes driver downloads, a community section, product registration, a technical support area and much more. We were able to get in contact with the company via email but found that almost any question you have can be answered on the website. We would like to have seen a live chat option from a company as well known as Asus, but this is only a minor drawback to their overall customer support.
Asus is one of the better-known companies when it comes to supplying hardware for your gaming PC. However, they are also one of the top manufactures of gaming laptops in the world. The Asus G74SX is a prime example of what this company is capable of producing. Not only do you get a lightweight laptop with a large screen, but you also get 12GB of RAM, an Intel i7 processor and one of the best video cards on the market. The combination of hardware and design make this gaming laptop stand out against the crowd and make it a great choice for hardcore and casual gamers around the world.
